They are a paraphyletic class of vertebrates amniotes provided with epidermal keratin scales. They were very abundant in the Mesozoic era when dinosaurs, pterosaurs, ichthyosaurs, plesiosaurs and mosasaurs emerged. According to traditional taxonomy reptiles are considered a class, but as the systematic cladística are a paraphyletic group, therefore without taxonomic value; instead it has preferred to use the clade Sauropsida to be monophyletic.
